As I mentioned earlier, after leaving the warm embrace of Elizabethtown, we moved on to southern Indiana, following the path of the Ohio River. Having spent a lot of my life on the Mississippi, I noticed was that the river was not quite as wide. The stretch of the river we saw back at Ft. Massac was much bigger and wilder than what we were now experiencing because the Tennessee River had joined. It was also a real surprise that there were not as many train tracks as you find along the Mississippi.
Our campground after Horseshoe Bend was called Miles Landing. Ironically, it was not on the water but near the little town of Elberfeld, Indiana. The campground is near a rather large wildlife refuge and there were a lot of small lakes so perhaps that was the origin of the name. We saw lots of egrets and wild turkeys. It was mostly full of semi-full time residents that seemed to be working in the area. But it was quiet, and very well maintained. Our little corner had a gorgeous view of the sunset.
We made about a 20 minute drive into downtown Evansville and had lunch at the Rooftop, on their dog friendly patio. There are a lot of nice historic buildings and a very scenic riverfront. Evansville is a smallish big city so a good experience for Kismet. She did really well.
We drove by Southern Indiana University which has a nice campus. But based on the volume of cars leaving at around 3 PM, it seems to be primarily a commuter college.
After Miles Landing, we went west to spend the weekend at a KOA in Illinois. This KOA, which is in the middle of nowhere in one sense, has turned itself into a destination. The whole thing is done in a western theme. There is a restaurant with a full bar (aka-saloon), a miniature golf course and a game room full of shooting games.
It is Western everywhere you look and they hosted a western themed wedding on Saturday. This was our most expensive campground in 2022 so glad it was only two nights. We average about $30 per night and this one was $58. But we enjoyed our stay and the restaurant was very affordable so that balanced things out.
