The drive from Greer's Ferry to Harrison was quite hilly and made for a challenging drive. I am not sure it did much to encourage us to travel to Colorado next summer in the RV. We settled here at Shady Oaks which is just outside of town. The owner was very gracious and wanted to make sure we knew about all the things to do in the area. The sites are a little tighter that the COE park but that is to be expected in a privately owned campground. The neighboring campers turned out to be very friendly over the course of our week.
Our first adventure was to visit the Buffalo River and the windy, hairpin roads continue. We went to Pruitt's Landing in hope of a morning hike and started on the trail but quickly realized it was just too overgrown to continue. We got back in the car and headed on to find the Koen Interpretative Trail and what a lovely hike that was.
The next day, we went for another drive and now the beauty of the area was even more evident.
We found another potential trail but it too was blocked from a downed tree. So we went on in the car and found even more photogenic scenery.
The next day, we did a walking tour of Harrison which is a very cute and historic little town with a population around 12,000. The lady at the Visitors Center was so kind and helpful and the downtown area is holding its own, not quite vibrant but still alive and kicking. I really enjoyed the hotel that had been restored and found the room prices were pretty reasonable. Unfortunately, the bar and restaurant closed during Covid.
After touring the old town, we did our grocery shopping at Hudson's and found another, newer part of Harrison. We returned to Shady Oaks to find the campground was starting to fill up for the weekend. It is now getting closer to Memorial Day and the weather is bringing folks out to camp.
