I still have more snapshots from the trip to Savannah, Georgia but also want to dive right into the trip that kicked off 2024. On January 2nd, after a relaxing NY Eve with friends and a day to pack and prepare, we were off on our January adventure. Our first stop was a historic Railroad Hotel, called the Midland, in a small Kansas town. The Kansas Pacific line still runs through town and the hotel is close enough that the train whistle might awaken you at night. The hotel is gorgeous and was very comfortable. The hotel served as the filming location of the 1973 movie, Paper Moon starring Ryan and Tatum O’Neal. The hotel is of course dog friendly and Kismet marched right in.
During the 1870s, a large migration of Bohemian and Moravian immigrants from Czechoslovakia settled in and around Wilson, Kansas. Many Czech families still live in the area and carry on the traditions. One of those traditions are the Czech painted eggs. They are found all over town.
We had dinner at the hotel and I had liver and onions. The liver had been soaked in Creme de Cacao and was absolutely exquisite. My wife had the pot roast which she enjoyed. After dinner, we had very affordable drinks. I actually enjoyed a shot of Laphroaig (Scotch from Islay), which I hadn’t tasted in a long while. We enjoyed our drinks by the Christmas tree in the lobby.
Wilson was a great stop!!
